Dr. DeShawn Taylor is a Gynecology and Family Planning Specialist committed to advancing access to reproductive health care for womb-bearing people through clinical care, education and training, and advocacy.
Desert Star Family Planning is a medical practice founded in 2013 to combat the stigma that surrounds reproductive health. This novel practice provides patient-centered well-woman, family planning, and sexual healthcare for women and men. Patients have access to annual exams, STD testing and treatment, birth control, and family planning advice, as well as medical and surgical abortions.
“Every womb-bearing person deserves access to the full range of reproductive healthcare regardless of circumstance or zip code,” says Taylor. “Furthermore, that care should be provided in a just, dignified, and exceptional manner by compassionate healthcare professionals who also advocate for reproductive health and justice in their communities.”
Initially aspiring to be a professor and clinical researcher, she graduated medical school, completed post-graduate training in obstetrics and gynecology, completed fellowship training in family planning, and earned a master’s degree in clinical research.
As her career advanced from Medical Director to Vice President of Medical Affairs in a statewide healthcare organization, she became disillusioned with the politics of medicine. A model for patient-centered care took shape in Taylor’s mind. But it also became clear that working for someone else would never get this model implemented. So she left the security of a VP-level position for private practice to make her vision a reality.
“As a ‘docpreneur,’ I am not beholden to politics- or profit-driven medicine,” Taylor explains. “I am free to spend the time that individual patients need without the pressures of getting patients in and out to meet someone else’s bottom line.”
Desert Star serves the entire state of Arizona and neighboring states with its core values of just, dignified, and exceptional care. The practice is also a hub for medical training and clinical research, with trainees traveling from across the United States and Canada to learn from Dr. Taylor.
Desert Star Family Planning intends to use their EnrichHER capital to expand services and staffing to serve more patients and meet growing demand in the community, as their team is currently at capacity. They also plan to fill some gaps in unmet community needs, such as postpartum care and wellness and gender-affirming care for transmen.
